The longitudinal cohort study consisted of 81,818 women and took place between 1991 and 2013. Assessment of the diets involved food frequency questionnaires and calculated adherence scores. The relationship between three different diets along with the risk of developing hearing loss provided the foundation for the research. The three dietary patterns were the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010). The researchers utilized detailed collected information on dietary intake every four years and discovered that the women whose diet closely resembled the AMED or DASH dietary patterns have a 30 percent higher chance of moderate or worse hearing loss than those women whose diets do not follow these dietary patterns. The information is self-reported, and the researchers believe that additional research on other populations is needed.
